EPIRUS EPIRUS EPIRUS EPIRUS

A magical region and at the same time the most unexplored area of Greece. Epirus is the name of the northwestern part of the country, opposite the Ionian islands. However, while the islands are flooded by visitors, Epirus remains a destination for the sophisticated traveler with deep knowledge of wild nature and ancient history.

Dodona - Sivota - Voidomatis - Smolikas

Many of the great Greeks who excelled in their fields worldwide and became benefactors of the Greek nation, came from Epirus. A truly mystical place run by the river Acheron where the ancients believed it was the Gate of Hades. Also, in Dodona you will find the second most popular oracle, after the oracle of Delphi. The geography of the area makes Epirus an all-year destination with its highly-acclaimed resort, Sivota overlooking the Ionian Sea.

As are the islands, the costs and rivers are ideal for watersports like windsurf, canoe and kayak. But the true adventure seekers travel deep in the hinterland to meet wild, barren mountains beautifully interspersed with lush valleys and rushing rivers like “Voidomatis”, ideal for extreme rafting. For the mountaineering enthusiasts, mount Smolikas holds a spectacular surprise: “Drakolimni” at an altitude of 2000 meters, it is a completely lunar like landscape. It would take at least four hours’ uphill, one that you will surely not regret because you’ll have the pleasure of holding in your hands a small harmless dragon lizard, a rare species remnant of the ice age in Greece.

Ioannina - Zagorochoria

Epirus’ capital is the city of Ioannina. Being one of the most beautiful Greek cities, the visitor can clearly acknowledge its historical significance as well as how vibrant and creative it is today. The cave of Ioannina is one of the most important caves in the world and a visit there is a must.

At the heart of Epirus, nestled among the steep and snowy slopes of Tymfi mountain range, you will find Zagorochoria National Park, one of the most beautiful and rich ecosystems in Europe. A complex of 46 picturesque traditional villages built in a magical setting amidst pine and fir trees is waiting to be discovered. Its unique traditional architecture, the impressive stone mansions and the undulating, natural forested surroundings are the ingredients of an unparalleled destination that should not be missed.

Epirus Gastronomy

The gastronomy stands as a separate category in Greek cuisine. Given the specific nature of the soil, you can find a great variety of local products mostly meat and cheese along with fine wines and distillates.

Epirus is a fast-growing region welcoming the visitors to appreciate its beauty and to reward them with unforgettable and intense holiday experiences.

Kudos tips

  • Stroll along the Ioannina lake at sunset. If you find a local, ask him to tell you stories about the legends and myths that surrounds it.
  • Try the delicious Epirus pies and accompany them with authentic “tsipouro”, the local drink. You will see everything clearer after a shot or two.
  • Visit the scenic town of Parga and swim the turquoise waters of the Ionian.
  • Sail Acheron river. A mystical experience awaits you.
  • Test the acoustics of the ancient theatre of Dodona, near the oracle. Absolutely sensational!
