A unique place in Greece, one of nature’s masterpiece that creates awe to its visitors from the first look. It is a cluster of giant rocks in Central Greece in the northwestern part of Thessaly. They were created about 60 million years ago and their tops host ancient monasteries, which make Meteora one of the most sacred places of Christianity after Mount Athos.

UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site

These monasteries are among the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage because they are a unique combination of Byzantine architecture and natural splendor. Each one is a guardian of the holy heritage keeping in their libraries magnificent collections of valuable relics and rare books. Their story begins in the 11th century when hermits and ascetics found refuge in the cavities and peaks of these rocks, in search of an ideal place for peace and prayer.

At the end of the 10th century the first monastery was founded. During the peak period Meteora counted 24 monasteries for men and women. Today only six can be visited. In older times the monks and visitors used ropes and pulleys to climb up and down, now it’s much easier and safer thanks to the steps that have been carved on the rocks. The monasteries operate as communes, all the hard work is shared equally amongst the habitants and there is no money used. The monks are warm, hospitable and ready to share what they have with their guests.

Outdoor Activities

Meteora are also known to lovers of nature and climbing. Many experienced guides are ready to initiate even the amateurs to the joys of outdoor adventures. There are plenty of natural trails to explore and nearby towns and villages to discover in order to understand local life and taste the unique monastic diet, which has influenced the local gastronomy.
