Thessaly is the dreamlike geographical region of Greece. Located on the east-central Greece between the Pindus Mountains and the Aegean Sea is a stunning blend of mountain and sea and a place that you can visit all year round. Its elevating natural gorgeousness with unique mountains, rivers, valleys, gorges, lakes and unique beaches supported two of the earliest Neolithic settlements, Sesklo and Dimini, on the continent. The region is full of myths and legends from ancient Greece and rich in Greek ancient history. According to Greek mythology, Thessaly is the land of the Centaurs, the birthplace of the hero of the Trojan War Achilles, the father of Medicine Asklipios and the area where the dispute between the Olympian gods, known as Titanomachia, took place.

The main cities of Thessaly, Volos, Larissa, Trikala and Karditsa, are cities with a fresh look but a traditional touch ideal for rest and relaxation. With these cities as a starting point, the options are endless.

The Sporades Islands

Just off Thessaly’s mainland east coast, the Sporades archipelago is one of the Mediterranean’s lesser-known island groups. The main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are the only inhabited islands of the 24 in total. Luxuriously green, blessed with an array of amazing beaches and seductively blue waters, the Sporades is a magnificent destination for nature enthusiasts. Whether you prefer hiking across pine-fragrant hills or lounging by the sea, you will always be surrounded by extraordinary beauty. The local gastronomy reflects the authenticity and the fertility of Sporades and is a delicious manifestation of the archipelago’s own supplies. The local-sourced products such as seafood, lamb, olives, olive oil, cheese, honey, herbs, fruit and vegetables, combined with the island’s cooking heritage produce some delicate-bursting dishes.

Meteora

A nature’s masterpiece and a unique place in Greece built in an area of stunning beauty, have rightfully earned its place as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. It is a cluster of giant rocks in Kalambaka, in the northwestern part of Thessaly. They were created about 60 million years ago and their tops host ancient monasteries, which make Meteora one of the most sacred places of Christianity in Greece, behind Mount Athos. These monasteries with their unique stone architecture and stunning views are among the most beautiful Orthodox monasteries in the world.

Pelion

Mount Pelion peninsula, the land of the Centaurs, is like a slice of some other, lusher country latched onto the eastern side of the Greek mainland. The place is a mountainous ridge of forested peaks, filled with vegetation from olive and pines to apple orchards, with glowing coves carved out of the cliffs has some of the best hiking trails in Greece. In the winter, Pelion provides some of the best skiing in Greece. Pelion also claims some of the most beautiful villages in all of Greece and they say the best mezedes in Greece come from Volos and Pelion, delicious seafood appetizers that go perfectly with the local drink of choice called tsipouro.

Lake Plastira

This artificial lake, also known as “Little Switzerland“, offers alluring beauty thanks to the surrounding idyllic landscape that captivates the mind at first sight. Lake Plastira, with its the traditional villages, stone houses and luxury accommodation, the monasteries, museums, caves and bridges is a natural wonder and lives every season at its fullest, promising to offer you the holiday you dreamed of.

Thessalian Cuisine

As in much of Greece, Thessaly enjoys a Mediterranean climate with dry, warm summers and mild, rainy winters and produces excellent savour unique wines such Rapsani, Anchialos and Black Mesenikola. Bread and Cheese have been the basic products playing a hero role in the region for ages and the local culinary heritage varies widely from place to place, according to the social-demographic conditions, the altitude, the fertility of the land and the professional occupation of the inhabitants. Not to be missed, to taste the flavourful handmade spoon sweets (gliko koutaliou) in Pelion, to take a sip of Tsipouro (a liquor obtained from the distillation of grape marc, similar to the Greek ouzo or raki) in Volos and to take a bite out of the delicious home made pies in Sporades.

  • Fall in love with Pelion. A must visit destination with a magnificent combination of imposing mountains, picturesque villages and beautiful beaches. The village of Makrinitsa has the most incredible views of mountainous Greece. The local cuisine will leave you speechless.
  • Explore the Sporades islands by hiring a small boat and enjoy the freedom to anchor and swim in the many bays, beaches and inlets and explore this fantastic archipelago.
